VICTORY IN MONTCALM!

VICTORY IN MONTCALM!!!

I want to say that I am very proud of CCCMontcalm.org & MCCAW’s DEDICATION to ending pound seizure in their county!!! We should take a moment to congratulate them all for their very hard work!

I am not going to go into too much detail on the meeting, as we have enough media coverage for you to watch below, lol…you can read up on all that occurred below.

I do want to take a moment to say that if you could please take a moment to write a letter of THANK YOU to those commissioners who voted to END the contract, I think that they would really appreciate the sincere thanks we have to give them! It was difficult for them, but in the end they listened, and we want them to know we appreciate that!

Yes (not to renew the contract): District 1 Commissioner Ron Blanding, District 2 Commissoner Tom Lindeman, District 3 Commissioner Ron Retzloff, District 4 Commissioner John Johansen, District 8 Commissioner Roger Caris and District 9 Commissoner Steve Crouse.

No (to renew the contract): District 5 Commissioner Carl Paepke, District 6 Commissioner Ron Baker and District 7 Commissioner Patrick Q. Carr.

One thing I want to mention is something that often goes unnoticed. Reubens Room has been taking sometimes up to 20+ cats WEEKLY from Montcalm Animal Shelter to save them from the fate of R&R. While this is WONDERFUL news, they have operated with very little donations. If you wish to make a donation or adopt a cat, please visit the site!!! We need to support these local rescues so that they can continue to save the Montcalm dogs & cats from R&R OR DEATH. Thanks!
www.reubensroom.petfinder.com

Also, if you are interested in donating to STOP (stop taking our pets) to keep the fight going in other cities, counties, and states. We will be using some donations to help Montcalm with any remaining rescue efforts as well as getting the shelter up and running Class B Free!!!!

Montcalm's Report Card from Kent~Dr. Swift THANK YOU!

Dear All,
It is evident that the findings and recommendations from Dr. Swift's report at this week's Blue Ribbon Panel meeting have generated a response from our public officials. Dr. Swift delivered her report in a most professional manner, detailing specific, hands-on recommendations for improvement. She provided numerous examples of good practices that can be used as examples by the Animal Control department. Her caring spirit and dedication are remarkable. I would encourage you to write a hand written thank you note to Dr. Swift if you could. She and her colleagues donated their time and their expertise, and Dr. Swift personally spent many, many of her own hours working on this detailed report. I would also encourage you to send a donation of any amount to the Humane Society of Kent County in Dr. Swift's honor. HSKC is generous not only with respect to this, but also in taking in animals from our county and treating them appropriately. You may know that a number of the dogs they received from Montcalm were infected with Parvo, and needed immediate care. This is also an opportunity to demonstrate to Montcalm County officials that when the right thing is done, the resources will appear. The Humane Society of Kent County is in need of funds for their "Buddy Fund." This fund is used to provide needed medical care to injured and sick animals. Some are cases of abuse or neglect, others are surrendered by their owners because the owners cannot afford to provide the needed care. This is the fund that is utilized when the HSKC accepts dogs from other counties, including Montcalm County, and cares for them. If you could send a donation in any amount, it will be appreciated by our gentle friends who rely on our support. I also commend each of you on your tenacity and your perseverence toward doing the right thing for the people and the animals. Special thanks to all of you who serve in a rescue capacity, whether that is housing, transport, or other contribution. Please continue your support and your activities. Please invite your friends and colleagues to send a check to the Humane Society. It is this variety of approaches that will result in achieving our mission - together. Thanks ever so much,
Fran Schuleit

STOP pound seizure--

STOP giving our pets to research--

a fate worse than death.

What is pound seizure? Pound seizure is the practice of "seizing" dogs and cats from shelters and pounds to sell to the biomedical research industry (their fate is death, sometimes after long-term agonizing studies).

What can you do? Two things; Send letters or call and donate to the cause. Read on for more details.

STOP which stands for Stop Taking Our Pets is comprised of members from several different groups already working hard to end pound seizure and rescuing dogs and cats from the pounds that still continue this barbaric practice. Our initial focus is Montcalm County, Michigan, and stopping pound and shelter animals from being given or sold into research. There are only 10 animal dealers left around the country that take animals from pounds and shelters and sell to research—and three of them (including the biggest) are in Michigan

The only way we can stop this is to get the word out--create noise. And for the noise to have the maximum impact on the Montcalm County Commissioners, we need to get the local folks to make noise as well. So we are undertaking a campaign to get the word out --locally through newspaper ads, postcard campaigns directed at the Commissioners and billboards -- and nationally (perhaps internationally as well) through the internet, letter writing campaigns and media attention.

*** We are in need of donations to help us raise public awareness on this horrific practice and put local as well as national and international pressure on the Montcalm County Commissioners. We only have a few months so we need to work quickly to raise funds. We would also be interested in any organizations sponsorship on this effort, so please contact us if interested! ***

Or you can send a payment via paypal at stoptakingourpets@yahoo.com

**We are also looking for solid connections with national media. If anyone wants to be actively involved in the working process, please contact Polly Sack at psack@gatehousemedia.com **

.Remember, together we are powerful. Thank you all for helping stop the ultimate betrayal of our best friends - the ultimate betrayal of public faith in the county "shelter" system.

02/03/09 Tuesday Stanton Updates

02/03/09 Tuesday

Below is a list of updated dogs to tell you about. As of right now we have seen a large support in more local rescues to help save the dogs, so they obviously take first priority in helping these dogs out to safety as it is quicker and cheaper to coordinate, so we are ok there, but we do still need help finding adopters for the dogs listed on Grand River Rover Rescue (Lakeside Kennels) if you are interested in adopting a Stanton/Montcalm dog.
Sunny: the Golden: GROMM has already been up and evaluated the dog and is ready to pull him if he is not adopted. There is another woman in Bay city who would foster him for Orphan Animals if for any reason GROMM did not take him.
Kiwi: Mid Mich Boxer Rescue committed to Kiwi as soon as she hit the shelter.
Scooter: Sheltie rescue is taking him if he is a purebred and Last Day and Carole Powell both want him if he is not a purebred. If Carole Powell takes him there will be no need for any money as they don't charge her. If Sheltie rescue takes him it would be great if there is money to pay the bail fee as they are smaller and could use the help.
Hannah: the Beagle is the only dog listed as of Sunday that there was no one stepped up for yet.
Sara and puppies: This is Sara the “dalmation” mix, she was surrendered to the shelter by her owners along with her seven puppies. They are all in need of a good home. They are all available for adoption! There is listed as 7 but the shelter told me today that 1 was adopted.
Diesel: Pit young boy that the shelter told me he was adopted, but I think he was the pit we pulled this am to go to the HS of Kent~I will check on this!
West: Dachshund~This is little West. He is a very friendly little guy. He is about 1 year old and full of energy He will be available for adoption on Feb.6Th!
Wilma: Beagle~She is not as old as she looks. She is probably only 4-6 years old. She is very sweet and well mannered. She will be available for adoption on Feb.6Th!
River: he is as friendly as can be and will sit for just about any kind of treat. He is a very high energy dog who will need a family who can allow him plenty of exercise. He will be available for adoption on Feb 5Th!

We also have the Montcalm Shelter PF site below to look at what dogs posted. http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/MI669.html

Oakley: was adopted from Montcalm today or yesterday so that is one less dog we have to arrange rescue for!!!!!
Sunny: the Golden: GROMM has already been up and evaluated the dog and is ready to pull him if he is not adopted. There is another woman in Bay city who would foster him for Orphan Animals if for any reason GROMM did not take him.

I'm TIRED

It was a long trip home on Monday night, but I am glad we were able to drive Wanda & Samson to rescue=)
They are safe and LOVEABLE dogs who are going to be great additions to someones family.
I have not been as involved in my scrapbooking and school work as I would like to be because Stanton/Montcalm has taken all of my energy lately, but I am going to commit myself to a bit more time to do those things I need to do in order to finish school and enjoy some alone time, lol...
Keep an eye out for my cards soon...I am going to put up packs of cards for animal lovers together and auction them off to donate to helping the Montcalm dogs of MI that are being taken for research.
Thank You!!!

01/28/09 Stanton MI Update

I FIRST OFF WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TO THOSE WHO DONATED TO HELP MAKE MY TRIP POSSIBLE AND TO BE ABLE TO HELP ME TRANSPORT SOME DOGS BACK TO NY MONDAY/TUESDAY. I WAS ABLE TO BRING WANDA AND SAMSON TO BLACK DOG SECOND CHANCE RESCUE AND POOR GINNY WAS AWAKEN AT 4AM TO RECEIVE THESE DOGS SO I WANT TO THANK HER FOR WORKING WITH ME ON MY HECTIC TRANSPORT SCHEDULE.

SECONDLY I WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW THAT AS A GROUP WE ARE STILL HERE, WE ARE NOT GOING AWAY; HOWEVER WE HAVE STARTED TO LOOK AT SOME GUIDELINES TO HELP US ALLIEVATE SOME THINGS ON OUR SIDE.
LAKESIDE KENNEL HAS BEEN KIND ENOUGH TO ALLOW US TO USE THEIR FACILITY ON A REALLY LOW RATE TO ENSURE THESE DOGS CAN BE PULLED TO SAFETY WHILE AWAITING TRANSPORT, BUT CANNOT KEEP TAKING DOGS THAT ARE NOT “SPOKEN FOR” BY RESCUE. WE HAVE SURGE, BARNEY, TIPPY, CASPER, DOLLY, LINDSAY, AND ACE IN HER KENNEL THAT HAVE NO RESCUES TO TAKE THEM. WE DO HAVE 2 PENDING BUT THE POINT IS, WE NEED TO HAVE RESCUES/HOMES LINED UP PRIOR TO PULLING THEM TO ENSURE WE ARE NOT OVERFILLING THE KENNEL TO PREVENT HER FROM RUNNING HER BUSINESS. ANOTHER THING IS OUR TRANSPORTER DRIVES 3HRS ONE WAY TO SAVE THESE DOGS AND WE HAVE HAD HER RUNNING LIKE A MADWOMAN SOMETIMES 2X A WEEK TO SAVE DOGS THERE. WE CAN LOOK AT ALTERNATIVES TO HAVING OTHERS HELP THAT ARE CLOSER TO THE SHELTER, BUT WITH AN ORGANIZED MEANS OF LETTING US KNOW WHAT DOGS CAN BE PULLED BY WHICH RESCUE WILL PREVENT SOME OF THIS AS WE ARE NOT GOING TO MAKE A TRIP TO THE SHELTER WITHOUT SOME KNOWLEDGE OF A RESCUE TAKING A DOG THAT IS THERE.

I HOPE YOU UNDERSTAND OUR REASONING BEHIND OUR DECISIONS, AS IT IS NOT EASY TO LEAVE A DOG BEHIND AND WE DO NOT WANT TO…BUT WE ARE LEAVING IT IN THE HANDS OF RESCUES TO STAND UP TO TAKE THESE DOGS.

http://search.petfinder.com/shelterSearch/shelterSearch.cgi?shelterid=MI669
http://www.lakesidepetkennels.com/petpage.html PLEASE LOOK HERE AT THE DOGS THAT WE PULLED BUT STILL NEED A RESCUE/ADOPTER TO TAKE THEM HOME

TODAY WE HAVE GOOD NEWS:
WE HAVE A RESCUE TRANSPORT FOR 3 OF OUR ALREADY PULLED DOGS TO GO TO TODAY WHICH FREES UP OUR KENNELS WITH LAKESIDE A LITTLE, AND I DECIDED MYSELF TO FOSTER BUSTER THE PIT SO WE HAVE 4 OPENINGS FOR LAKESIDE, WHICH MEANS WE MAY BE ABLE TO PULL MORE DOGS ON TUESDAY (MONDAY IS HOLIDAY, MONTCALM NOT OPEN)
THEY HAVE ADDED MORE DOGS TO THE PF SITE AND WE HAVE TO REALLY TRY HARD TO GET THE LABS OUT, AS R&R CAME IN LAST WEEK AND DID TAKE 3 LABS (YES 3 LABS, SHELBY, BARNEY, AND TROOPER) SO WE NEED TO ACT FAST AND GET THESE GUYS OUT ON TUESDAY BEFORE THEY GO TOO! WE NEED DONATIONS FOR SAMSON, HOSS, BILLY, COMET, AND WANDA (SHE IS NOT AVAIL UNTIL 20TH)…ALL LABS (X)

Comet is a very cheery Little boy. He is about 1 year old and very playful. He has a good personality and is in need of a loving home. Adopt him today!

This is Billy. He is a very nice big guy. He is an older adult but very sweet. He came in as a stray and is now available for adoption. Adopt him today!!

HE WILL BE PULLED MONDAY BUT NEEDS RESCUE/FOSTER..PLEASE EMAIL ME!

This is Brandy. She is a very cheerful little puppy. She likes other dogs and loves children.; She will be available for adoption on Jan. 19Th! NEEDS ADOPTION/RESCUE

Stanton Update # 7~URGENT

Stanton Mission
01/13/09

URGENT NEWS
**Some dogs in Montcalm are sick…we do not know what is wrong…could be Parvo, could be infections, cold?? But if the commissioners or uppers get ahold of this news they will probably insist all the dogs get put down, so please don’t go making calls to Stanton/Montcalm in a panic, as it will only harm the dogs. There are 11 dogs in the shelter right now and 2 are showing signs, and 1 we pulled has signs, and we all know what happened to Mack…so we need your help! I know this is asking a LOT from you…but there is little for options left…we cannot let them euthanize the whole kennel via barrel…so we have been offered the ability to take the 2 sick dogs to the vet and get bloodwork to find out…We need help paying medical expenses for the bloodwork as well as their treatment whatever it is. We are also getting help coordinated to get the shelter disinfected and cleaned out thoroughly. It will cost about $38/dog for bloodwork plus an additional for fecal to rule out worms and we are going to test the 2 sick dogs today so we have to pay that bill today.
We also have funds set aside for Hilda but are trying to make arrangements for her to go to a rescue and need to make sure she is medically safe too, so she may need preventative parvo medication or whatever medication is needed for the 2 sick dogs to prevent outbreaks!

We pulled Dolly on 01/08 that was another owner surrender that was NOT on PF…Dolly was a tall Walker Coonhound that was pulled and vetted to be Heartworm Positive, so we will need to treat her. This will cost about $135 which obviously dips into our pulling funds. We need to also address another dog at Last Day Dog Rescue that has also come from Stanton as HW+(Carson) so we will be raising funds to help with those 2 dogs on top of our ongoing efforts to keep the dogs safe from R&R.
If you wish to donate Directly to the rescues handling their care, please visit their websites…and just remember to put a note or memo on the donation that it is for Dolly, or Stanton dogs.

Stanton Update #6

Stanton Mission
01/12/09

Hello everyone!!!!

**UPDATE**Mack was euthanized because he was sick=( We will ask them more questions when we go today. We found a rescue for the GSD but she needed some medications, so some money was set aside for her and she is getting pulled today.

We pulled Dolly on 01/08 that was another owner surrender that was NOT on PF…Dolly was a tall Walker Coonhound that was pulled and vetted to be Heartworm Positive, so we will need to treat her. This will cost about $135 which obviously dips into our pulling funds. Stanton Update #5

Stanton Mission
01/11/09

Hello everyone!!!!

**UPDATE**WE ONLY HAVE ABOUT $150 LEFT WHICH IS NOT ENOUGH TO PULL ANYDOGS ON MONDAY EXCEPT MACK WHOM WE HAVE A RESCUE LINED UP AND SPONSORED FOR…WE NEED SOME DONATIONS TO HELP CONTINUE OUR SUCCESSFUL EFFORTS IN STANTON. PLEASE CROSSPOST AND THINK ABOUT EVEN DONATING $1 TO THE CAUSE…WE DO NOT WANT TO HAVE TO SURRENDER 1 MORE DOG TO THIS RESEARCHER IF WE CAN HELP IT! IF SOMEONE WISHES TO RESCUE A DOG IN MONTCALM, PULLING AND TRANSPORT IS AVAILABLE FOR YOU
Thursday we pulled Rocko as he was an owner surrender Shepard mix who was available for pulling. He is going to be vetted and await his rescue/adoption if you know anyone interested in adopting him, please let Laurel know betterhave@sbcglobal.net
We also pulled a dog that was another owner surrender that was NOT on PF…Dolly was a tall Walker Coonhound that was pulled and vetted to be Heartworm Positive, so we will need to treat her. This will cost about $135 which obviously dips into our pulling funds. Now for the bad news: We did NOT pull Mack, …BUT it was only because they were not released to rescue today they are not available until tomorrow, but we have a few adoption prospects on those dogs so if they are able to be adopted out, we will gladly accept that fate! Fred & Wilma are not longer listed on PF so we will check to see if they were adopted=) We have been working with Montcalm on keeping an agreement to hold these dogs for us UNLESS they are adopted so we will be able to pull them unless they go to a forever home and not worry about them going to R&R. Hilda will not be able to go into rescue/home until Monday 01/12/09 so we can pull her then if we have enough funds.

What do we need? We need a Pitbull rescue to help us with Casper…he was listed as a lab mix, but is clearly apbt and we now need a rescue to step up for him. We have fully vetted him but may have some dog aggression. If interested please contact Laurel betterhave@sbcglobal.net to work with her on coordination.
There is also a German Shepard that is in need of a GSD rescue to step up for her…again if interested please contact Laurel betterhave@sbcglobal.net. She is at the shelter right now and awaiting an approved GSD rescue. We will try to get pics up tomorrow of her.

We have a ChipIn set up or email it to paypal address melissahenchen@yahoo.com

Doreen's Doggie Delights

http://www.doreensdoggiedelights.com/products_page.htm
I live in West Michigan with my husband and our two fur kids, Lucy and Wrigley. Since I’ve been unemployed, I have been looking for something to do in today’s economy.

I love to bake...but, I didn’t need to eat my goodies, and decided that I’d make a go of trying to bake something for my “kids.” Purposefully, not adding sugar, but leaving all the good stuff in place, I baked up a batch of pumpkin-peanut butter/banana cookies. The house smelled heavenly as the cookies baked.

After making several batches and passing them among my friends, and getting great reviews, I felt inspired to give a business a try.

We watch Food Network and have watched several inspiring stories of folks starting their businesses from their kitchen...one batch at a time. So...with God’s help, I too will succeed.

Recently, I started a social network: www.goingtothedogs.ning.com and www.goingtothecats.ning.com to help generate some contacts. What I didn't expect was the outpouring of love and support the network would have as we work together to save the lives of dogs and cats across the states as well as helping each other. Please, if you have a few minutes, come and see what we are doing.

Part of my dog cookie sales go towards rescue causes so please buy with that in mind.

STANTON UPDATE #3

Stanton Mission
01/07/09

We have had 2 rescuers step up to take dogs for pulling tomorrow; however we do need to make arrangements for transport coordination and I am looking for some help with that if anyone is interested in putting legs together from MI to NY, MI to SD. I have already put a post online with PNP to find someone help, but if you can help just email me.
We have managed to raise the first amount needed to pull the 9 dogs and 3 cats on Monday, and I know how much that was to ask for, but I am going to make another plea. We have $230 right now in funds but we want to pull all 3 dogs available on Thursday, and Hilda on Monday plus we have to vet them to be able to transport to their rescues. We are asking to send $5 each if you can…if you can’t we understand, just do us the favor by forwarding this email on to a few others that may be able to help…any bit can save these animals and we have proven that! We are on a roll here, so lets not stop!

STANTON UPDATE #2

Stanton Mission
01/06/09

Just 1 day after we rescued 9 dogs and 3 cats and I just checked the petfinder for Montcalm to see an additional 3 dogs added.

We have Fred, Wilma, and Mack available on the 8th to be pulled or adopted, then Rocko is available IMMEDIATELY, and Hilda available after the 11th.
Please lets hope that some of these dogs get adopted, but in the meantime we need to try to find someone willing to take these dogs…

We need volunteers to step up for either Fostering, or rescues to take these dogs. We have a few possibilities of Out of state rescues, but we cannot pull the dogs unless we know transport is fully coordinated, or we have a temporary foster situation for them to go to while coordinating…
Can you help???
Please contact goingtothedogsmail@yahoo.com if you can or know someone who can help us save these dogs!!! We can set up an application to foster
http://search.petfinder.com/shelterSearch/shelterSearch.cgi?shelterid=MI669
Also, we have enough funds to pull 2 more dogs so any additional donations are much appreciated!
I will be working with the current rescues on the dogs they have to help them find forever homes for the dogs, but yesterday I accidentally gave the wrong link to our sister site, lol…so it is really… http://goingtomynewhome.ning.com/

STANTON UPDATE #1

STANTON MISSION

Do you know what we did today???

We pulled 9 dogs and 3 Cats from the Montcalm shelter!!!!!

HURRRAYYYY!!!!
We want to thank each and every one of you for all of your help:
Donations from Valerie Hildebrand, Paula Anselmo, Stacy Reeves, Janice Melnyk, Adele Mirshak, Deborah s Beliveau, Cathy Gallagher, Claudia Ginter, Bonnie, and the list goes on…Some even offered to send additional help to Last Day Dog Rescue who is taking most of the dogs. Riley who was another dog in the shelter was being pulled by another rescue group=) Fred & Wilma were strays so they are not available until the 8th to pull so hopefully some potential adopters stop by or owner reclaims take place by then=)
http://search.petfinder.com/shelterSearch/shelterSearch.cgi?shelterid=MI669

What We accomplished
Well at $70/dog to pull and $35/cat we spent $735 donation dollars to just get them out to safety! What is next for these animals?
Casper: is going to Kirby’s Friends Rescue after full vetting
Buster: is going to Lakeside
Killer Bee: is going to Heather’s rescue
Kitties, Milo, Bandit, Donni, Marie, Foxy, and Scrappy: are going to Last Day Dog Rescue

What else needs to be done?
Well, we got them out, but we still need to vet some of these guys to prevent any unnecessary outbreaks. Anyone wishing to donate to their medical care feel free to pledge to the paypal address melissahenchen@yahoo.com or to the rescue directly. We also have to focus on a few different things this week:
1. More dogs can come in at any time…so be ready for another effort to take place…we need fosters, we need rescues to step up and help coordinate with us.
2. There is a meeting 01/12 to discuss R&R renewing their contract to get dogs out of Montcalm in which we need MI representation
3. We have some medical needs dogs from previous pulls from Stanton that need our urgent attention and funding to help remove tumors and help with leg deformities, and heartworm. We cannot forget these animals that were pulled before…they are not safe until they have a clean bill of health and a forever home! We will be posting these dogs to our sister site www.goingtomynewhome.ning.com but until then we must make sure they are not forgotten.
4. Lastly, I want to make sure everyone knows how grateful I am for all of your patience with me returning calls, emails, donations, late nights, etc. Without all of your help this would not have happened and I have to say to Tereasa our transporter~WAY TO GO!!! We know it must be a stressful situation to pull that many animals and be concerned about making all aspects of the transport run smoothly…
